A Natural Oral Routine: DIY Toothpaste and Mouthwash

Toothpaste has been a longtime frustration for me. Even when it's 'all natural', there's usually something that I can't pronounce or don't understand. Does that necessarily make it a bad thing ... no, but I just don't like it. Call me anal, call me silly, tell me I'm overthinking it. I doesn't matter, it still bothers me. It's just that plain and simple.

I've made a few toothpastes over the years and never quite loved them. Then I found Earthpaste. Did I finally find a toothpaste of my dreams?! How could it be. A few simple ingredients and my teeth felt great after using it. Even the kids loved their lemon flavor. After about a year of using Earthpaste, I found a problem with it ... the price tag! But I finally found a toothpaste that I loved ... was it worth it?

I should know, you should yell at me ... the best things in life are homemade! If the ingredients are truly that simple, I should be able to make it myself. So, I did. I did a lot of digging about amounts and the reasons why to use some ingredients over others and I finally felt confident. I knew the taste and consistency I wanted.

DIY Toothpaste and Mouthwash

One big concern was the amount of baking soda and clay, I didn't want to harm my teeth. Luckily, I have a few dental hygienist friends that were able to advise me on amounts of ingredients for safety and protection of my teeth. And yes, I know, Earthpaste doesn't use baking soda ... but I like it! Also, xylitol, an ingredient that I never wanted to use before in cooking but I was assured that it helps fight cavities so it is very beneficial in toothpastes.

Let me just admit that the first few batches got tossed! As I always say, my stubbornness pays off and I finally did it. I have been using this toothpaste for just over a year now. My teeth have never felt better and I have had great visits with my dentist!

DIY Toothpaste and Mouthwash

Homemade Clay Toothpaste

5 T calcium powder
5 T coconut oil (organic, unrefined)
2 T baking soda (aluminum free)
2 T xylitol
1 T redmond or bentonite clay
distilled water if it's too thick ... I start out with a Tablespoon at a time, winter I need more than summer since the coconut oil is at a thicker consistency in my house.

Optional: Essential oils or food grade, organic extract. I love peppermint, cinnamon and orange the best! The kids still use lemon. I use about 5-7 drops per batch.

Mix all ingredients except the water and clay until you have a very smooth consistency and it is thoroughly mixed together. Then add the clay and flavoring. Finally add water if you need so it is the right consistency.

I keep mine in a small 4 oz mason jar and use a popsicle stick to scoop it out on my toothpaste.

DIY Toothpaste and Mouthwash

Tea Tree Mouthwash

2 c distilled water
1 t xylitol
2 t calcium powder
5 drops tea tree oil

Mix all in a mason jar. When ready, swish a bit in your mouth and spit out.

The 10 Best Homemade Kombucha Flavors

Earlier this year, my friend introduced me to homemade kombucha. I have to be honest, at first I told her, 'Not a chance, I'm a wheatgrass girl and kombucha is way to much like vinegar for me.' After she convinced me to try a sip, I was instantly hooked. Homemade tastes nothing like store bought ... duh! After about a week since I had my first sip, she gave me a SCOBY and my homemade kombucha life started! It's only been about 6 months, but I have since given daughters out to about 5 others so they can start making their own. The kombucha family is growing! My mom, who has chronic joint and back pains, is hooked (and has noticed a little improvement).

The 10 Best Homemade Kombucha Flavors

There are so many benefits of kombucha. It really is quite the health elixir!
  • Detoxification
  • Joint Care
  • Boosts Immune System
  • Aids Digestions and Stomach Issues
  • Increases Energy
There are so many ways to make kombucha. I do a continuous brew. My one gallon container makes about 5-6 16-oz bottles a week (in the summer it was 3-4 days because my house was so hot and and kombucha fermented faster). It takes about 15-20 minutes every time I make a batch. Even in the crazy busy months, it is so worth it!

The 10 Best Homemade Kombucha Flavors

During my short time as a kombucha brewer, I have tried so many combinations of fruits and herbs with the change of seasons it's been a great little flavor adventure. With fall now here, I have been completely obsessed with apple cider and chai flavored kombucha. I decided it was high time to share with everyone all the amazing flavors that I have grown to love. Please remember, when doing a continuous brew, you always want to add the flavors to your secondary fermentation so that you don't effect your SCOBY with any of them. If you have ANY questions, please ask. I'm not an expert (yet), but together we can find the answers!

The 10 Best Homemade Kombucha Flavors

The 10 Best Homemade Kombucha Flavors

Honey, Ginger, Lemon (raw honey for a healthier booch)

Lavender and Lemon

Apple, Turmeric, Ginger

Mango and Lime

Berry-Craze! Blackberry, blueberry and strawberry ... oh my!

Blueberry Basil (fresh basil please)

Strawberry, Mint, Lime (fresh mint please)

Chai Spice Blend (dried cinnamon, ginger, coves, nutmeg and cardamon)

Apple Cider (apples and a cinnamon stick)

Purple Grape (tastes like wine!)

I'm not going to give you exact amounts, because it all depends on your flavoring strength preferences. For instance, I'm a ginger fanatic, however, to many, mine is too spicy for them. Play around with them to see what you like best. It also depends on how you secondary. Some people secondary the whole batch together. Some people use 12 oz bottles and others 16 oz. A few things to remember ...

  • If you're using frozen fruit, you generally don't need as much as fresh for the flavor to really permeate your booch.
  • Dried vs. fresh spices ... Use 1/2 the amount of dried. i.e. 1 tsp of grated ginger = 1/2 tsp of dried ginger
  • The flavor grows with everyday that it is in secondary fermentation.
There are tons of places to get your own SCOBY and start brewing. If you buy store bought kombucha, start saving money and start brewing. You won't regret it! Remember, the best things in life are homemade. My friend got hers from Kombucha Kamp. Their directions were super easy to follow and both of our SCOBYs are stronger than ever!

Tea Tree Oil and Why You Can't Live Without It

Essential oils, while becoming a little more mainstream are still far from being a typical household remedy and use. Tea tree oil, or melaleuca oil, is one oil that most people have come in contact with before in some fashion and it is the most studied and researched essential oils with findings and conclusions being published for anyone who is interested to read about.

Tea tree oil is produced from Melaleuca alternifolia, a shrub like tree which is found along streams and in swampy areas in its native land of Australia. Native aboriginals have been using tea tree oil for years. Back in the 1920's, chemist Arthur Penfold found that tea tree oil was an extremely promising plant due to its antiseptic properties and brought his findings to America. Along with the rich history of tea tree oil comes with its rich uses. Tea tree oil is anti-bacterial, anti-viral, kills fungal infections, disinfects wounds and sanitizes and helps fight colds and soothe sore throats. Yes ... all of that (and more) out of one amazing essential oil!

I have been using tea tree oil for a couple years now, but only recently has it been a staple all around my home. I use it in the kitchen, the bathroom, the floors, the garden and most recently directly on the family! I don't know what I would do without this amazing oil in my home.

Make sure you are using 100% certified therapeutic grade essential oils. Oil Fragrances are already mixed with carrier oils and some have fillers and artificial ingredients. I also have used a tea tree oil that was not a fragrance oil but not certified as therapeutic and I did not have the same results. My favorites are from Eden's Garden and Mountain Rose Herbs. Just like anything else, avoid excessive use of any essential or carrier oil.

Tea Tree Oil and its Many Amazing Uses

Mosquito & Bug Repellant

Keeping the bugs away makes my kids happy which makes me happier and in Wisconsin, we have lots of bugs! Here is a recipe that has worked for us and our garden.

Bug Bite Relief

If nothing else, remember this one ... it has changed my children's lives! We live in southern Wisconsin and have a wooded lawn ... mosquito haven! When the kids get a bite, I put tea tree oil directly onto their bite and it not only stops the itching within minutes, but in more cases I never even see the bite! I swear they disappear! This is why tea tree oil is miracle juice in my book!

Lice Prevention

Add to your children's shampoo. About 5% to be effective. Some studies have shown tea tree to kill lice once having them ... something to look into!

Clear Acne

Zap those zits! Mix a pinch of clay powder, such as Redmond Clay, with 1-2 drops of tea tree. Apply the paste to your pimple and let dry (up to overnight), then rinse. Don't overuse though, tea tree can dry out your skin after a lot of use.

Remove Makeup:

No more harsh chemicals around your precious eyes, just mix 1/4 c coconut oil, 10 drops tea tree oil.

Soothe Sores

Tea tree can cleanse and fight infections. Mix with a little coconut oil and apply directly to cleaned cut or sore. Put a bandaid on if needed.

Diaper Rash

Mist diluted tea tree, lavender and chamomile onto those sore bottoms for some easy relief.

Toenail Fungus:

Apply directly. Have I said anti-fungal yet? Yup, clean out those toes and pull out the flip-flops again!

Hand Sanitizer

I am all for clean hands, but the use of mainstream hand sanitizer a million times a day drives me crazy. Not only does it strip away all the good bacteria, but it dries your hand out way too much. Tea tree is naturally antibacterial and witch hazel is softer on your skin than alcohol. Mix 4 oz, aloe vera gel, 2 t witch hazel, 15 drops tea tree, 4 drops of lavender and 4 drops of orange or lemon. Put in a container and it will keep for a month.

Disinfectant Spray

In a spray bottle, mix 10-15 drops of tea tree oil with water (mix tea tree with lemon if you'd like). Spray on doors knobs, bathtubs, sinks, toilets, toys and anywhere else you find germs sitting. Allow to dry.

Bad Breath Be Gone!

There are a lot of tea tree toothpastes on the market or you can make your own. I like adding a tea tree mouthwash to my routine. Gargle 1/2 c water with 1 drop of tea tree (add a drop of peppermint if you like that pepperminty flavor). Swish it around to really get into those small nooks and crannies of your mouth!

Foot Odor Be Gone!

Pour hot water into a basin. Add 15 drops of tea tree oil, 5 drops of rosemary oil and 3 T oil (I like coconut or apricot kernel). Soak for 15-20 minutes daily.

Deodorize Stinky Diaper Pails and Garbage Cans

Mix 1/4 c baking soda with 1/4 t tea tree oil. Mix it around to get out all the lumps and sprinkle a little bit on the bottom of your garbage can to reduce odors and prevent bacteria from growing.

Natural Cleaners

I add tea tree oil to almost every cleaner I make. It smells great and it's antibacterial properties are unmatched in the essential oil world! Here's a few recipes. If you're not big into making your own cleaners (yet), try Branch Basics. I've had wonderful results with their products.

Natural remedies do not work for everyone so consult your physician for any concerns. I am far from a doctor, but essential oils have worked for me and I hope they work for you!

Raw Honey Face Wash: For Smooth, Healthy Skin

I am a bit of a honey fanatic. I love how amazingly versatile it is. If you read my post Stay Healthy with Honey, you will understand that honey is some pretty powerful stuff. After writing that post, I started using honey in my hair on occasion and I really like it. The next logical step would be to make a face wash, right?! I can't lie, I was a little leery. The idea of washing my face with sticky honey was a little out there (even for me).

I am one of those people that has to use a moisturizer as soon as I get out of the shower. I didn't feel comfortable with any lotions on the market (that I could afford), so I began using straight coconut oil. I loved it! Then, after a couple weeks, I started to break out around my nose. I stopped using the coconut oil to see if that's what it was and within a week, the breakout was gone. I knew this was the perfect time to try a honey face wash. I have been using it for a month now and I still love it. No breakouts and what's really amazing is I have stopped using a moisturizer! My face is healthy and completely nourished! Again. I love honey!!

  • Honey gently removes dirt and impurities and it leaves the natural oils your skin needs.
  • Raw honey has natural antibacterial properties, helping to reduce breakouts.
  • Since it is so gentle and nurturing to the skin, it is ideal for very sensitive skin, rosacea, and eczema.
  • It works well on all skin types from sensitive to oily to eczema! It is gentle while still nourishing your skin.
Raw Honey Face Wash: For Smooth, Healthy Skin

I use either raw honey or manuka honey. They aren't heated/pasteurized so all of their strong antibacterial properties are in tact. I highly recommend using one of these options over the honey bear that you find at the grocery store.

I use the apricot kernel and sweet almond oil because the are really good for your skin. They are light oils that can help moisturize as well as get rid of wrinkles and dark spots while exfoliating. If you are prone to breakouts and acne, I would use all sweet almond oil and skip the apricot kernel. Apricot kernel can be a little more intense, so it may clog pours if you have that skin type.

You don't have to use essential oils, but every little bit helps! So, what essential oils should should you use? There are many that will work great, such as lavender or even tea tree, but I like to go for ones that will really help the wrinkles!
  • Carrot seed oil helps fade scars while improving the tone of aging skin
  • Patchouli helps promote new cell growth and smooths the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Rose oil can help the breakdown of collagen in the skin which leads to a loss of elasticity and wrinkles
  • Frankincense and myrrh are also great ... I haven't invested in these oils yet, but I have heard amazing anti-aging stories and would love to hear if you've tried them!

Raw Honey Face Wash

1/4 c raw honey
2 T sweet almond oil
1 T lemon juice
1 T apricot kernel oil
1/2 T apple cider vinegar
5 drops essential oils (optional)

Most raw honey is a little thick so it is best to melt it a little before mixing. I use a double boiler. Then, mix all ingredients together until the consistency is completely smooth. Keep in a air-tight container.

Always mix it thoroughly before using. You just need a nickel size squirt. After washing, it is best to rinse with cold water to get all the honey off.

It should keep for about a month.

Essential Oil Diffuser Recipes for Every Mood

I honestly don't know what I would do without my diffuser ... Okay, yes I do because I went for years without one. However, now that I have one, there's no turning back. I run the diffuser almost every day. At first when I got it, I would just put some lavender it it, but that quickly got old. Nothing against lavender, I still use it every night by the kids rooms, but I needed something more.

I began playing around with different smells and different aromas. I looked though a Guide to Essential Oils and started to dig a little deeper in the what oils pair well with others along with what their healing benefits are. It was really fun trying out new blends. I'm not going to lie, there were a few that I had to waste because the smell just wasn't cutting it for me or it was making my mood crazy!

Essential Oil Diffuser Recipes for Every Mood

There are many diffusers out there. Find the one that is right for you and your pocketbook. I love my Allay Litemist, it was $35 on Amazon and fills my living room and kitchen nicely. I also use the Eden's Garden Wall Plug-Ins at nighttime in the hallway by our bedrooms.

Below are my absolute favorite diffuser blend recipes. They are the ones that I continue to use over and over ... and over again! The ones that I use a lot of, like the Peace to You blend, I make in bulk by combining the oils in a separate container. Then, I don't have to pull out all the oils every time I want to use it. Plus, I also like using that blend as a body spray too ... you'll love it!

Chapstick Detox: Homemade Lip Care

Hello, my name is Ashley and I am addicted to Chapstick ... cherry flavor.  Chapstick has been my achilles heal. Every time I try to give it up and use a natural chapstick it never works. After a few hours, my lips are burning and I grab that evil little bottle of Chapstick again. My lips are taking a beating during this cool Wisconsin winter and no chapstick seems to do the trick anymore. I have thrown every Chapstick out of my house in complete frustration and anger. My lips have had enough! The addiction must end!

I tried making a lip balm with beeswax and still my lips weren't happy. Wind out of my sail ... I thought I was going to go back to Chapstick! Ugh. I have to keep going ... be strong!

I have been using an Anti-Aging Sugar Scrub for my dry skin, so I figured a good place to begin replenishing my lips would be a sugar scrub too. I tried it and my lips felt great. I made a special lip scrub for my lips and it is working great, however, I didn't want to use the sugar scrub when I was out and about. I knew I still needed something for my lips on a day-to-day basis.

Chapstick Detox: Homemade Lip Care

I gave a girlfriend some of the beeswax lip balm I made seeing if she would like it. We began talking about the need for a barrier against the elements and we needed more than just coconut oil, but the beeswax wasn't working for me. After she left, the idea of lanolin popped in my head. Most every mom has some in their home from when they were breastfeeding. It is a great barrier and I thought I would try substituting beeswax with lanolin to see what would happen. The outcome is pure greatness! It is a soft butter-like consistency and it stays on my lips longer than just oil.

So far, my lips are still in heaven. I haven't needed to use chapstick for a few days and my lips have never felt better! I tried my beeswax lip balm again, now that I haven't been craving Chapstick and my lips were a lot better with it. I don't know if it was my 'addiction' to Chapstick that made my lips irritated when I tried using it the first time or if my lips just got used to the oils more, but it's working. Now, I use the sugar scrub in the morning and the lip balm when I need some protection. If my lips get chapped or dry from a day ... out in the 15 degree Wisconsin Wonderland ... I bust out the lip butter for some intense moisturizing.

I've been off of the 'sauce' for a week now and my lips are feeling better than ever. What's even better is that I'm not grabbing for Chapstick 20 times a day! I have gone full days without putting anything on my lips and they don't seem to mind. They are smooth and I no longer have the flaky chapped lip feeling!

Chapstick Detox: Homemade Lip Care

I have spent most of this past winter playing around with different recipes and finding what is okay for lips and what's not. There are lots of websites that have conflicting information so it was really hard to find 'the truth'. This is the PractiGanic truth and what's working for me and my fam ... in our elements. Everyone's skin and situation is different. If you find something isn't quite right for you, change up the proportions a little until you find what you love.

The coconut oil and shea butter are great moisturizers. Honey is a natural source of vitamins and minerals and it helps your lips retain their moisture. Beeswax is a natural component that also helps your lips retain their moisture. It also has a bit of an antibacterial property that can really helps against severe chapped lips.

Easy Homemade Lip Balm

1 oz coconut oil, unrefined
1 oz shea butter
1/2 oz beeswax
20 drops essential oils (optional)

Put all ingredients except for the essential oils in a jar. Put the part in pot and fill the pot with water around the jar. Be careful not to get water in your jar. This makes a very easy double boiler.

Easy Homemade Lip Balm

Leave the pot on medium heat, stirring constantly, until your beeswax has melted. Remove from heat and add essential oils and Vitamin E . Leave the jar in the water so that the lip balm stays warm and doesn't harden. Using a syringe, fill your lip balm containers one at a time. Let them sit for about 10 minutes before you cap them. Use as much as you'd like, but if you'd made to much, simply cap the mason jar and when you need more, melt it again.

Easy Homemade Lip Balm

To add a little tint, use beetroot or cacao powder or just add a little of your favorite lip stick!

Homemade Lip Balm

Moisturizing Lip Butter

1 T lanolin (If you are allergic, try organic nipple creams)
1 T coconut oil, unrefined
1 T shea butter
6 drops essential oils (optional)

*If you aren't concerned with having a barrier from the wind and cold, simply replace the lanolin with mango butter ... another great moisturizer!

Mix all ingredients in a bowl, put in container for use. This mixture is very loose so make sure it is in a container that won't leak.

Moisturizing Lip Butter

Supar Scrub

2 t brown sugar
1 t coconut oil, unrefined
1/2 t shea butter
1/2 t honey
6 drops essential oils (optional ... I have been using peppermint to really invigorate my lips, but lavender is a good calming oil to use)

Put all ingredients in a bowl and mix until thoroughly incorporated. Put in a small container and use when you need it. When you use it, massage the sugar scrub into your lips and then wipe off. Your lips will be left feeling silky smooth!

Homemade Anti-Aging Sugar Scrub

I'm now in my mid-thirties and on my third child ... let's face it, my skin is not what it used to be!  If I don't start moisturizing and doing something now, it's just going to keep getting worse and worse ... or should I say, saggier and wrinklier! I plan on aging gracefully, whether my body likes it or not!

I started doing a little research on easy (and cheap) things that I can do now. There are a million and two anti-aging serums out there and many of them would make me take a second mortgage out on my home! I wanted something that I could quickly whip up and start feeling better about those wrinkles. Mind over matter right?!

So here is what I found ... sugar scrubs: easy, quick, effective and leave you feeling silky smooth. I'm sold!

Brown sugar has anti-bacterial properties and contains Vitamin B. Honey is filled with natural vitamins and minerals and helps your body retain its moisture.

So now, what oils to use? Grapeseed oil is light in texture and is easily absorbed by the skin. Grapeseed oil has mildly astringent qualities, which help to tighten and tone both normal and oily skin types. Grapeseed oil is known to contain powerful antioxidants. I also usually always have grapeseed oil in my house. I did find that argan and rose hip are also great anti-aging oils that are help with toning and wrinkles and sagging.

Next, what essential oils should I use?
  • carrot seed oil helps fade scars while improving the tone of aging skin
  • patchouli helps promote new cell growth and smooths the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • rose oil can help the breakdown of collegen in the skin which leads to a loss of elasticity and wrinkles
  • frankincense and myrrh are also great ... I haven't invested in these oils yet, but I have heard amazing anti-aging stories and would love to hear if you've tried them!
  • You can also find a blend like Age Defy from Eden's Garden and it takes some of the trial and error away!

Homemade Anti-Aging Sugar Scrub

Homemade Sugar Scrub

1 cup brown sugar
1/2 c grapeseed oil (argan or rose hip too)
10 drops essential oils

Mix all ingredients together and keep in a airtight container. Use about 1 tablespoon or as needed in the shower and scrub away! Rinse off and your skin will be silky smooth!

The mixture should be good for up to two months.

Why I Love Nutritional Yeast

I think obsessed would be an understatement when talking about my love for nutritional yeast. Whenever I'm talking nutrition (which is a lot), I always bring out my big container of nutritional yeast to show people. I think the reason I have run out of my small tupperware is that I always send a sample of nutritional yeast home with friends so they can try it out and fall in love too.

So, what is nutritional yeast anyways? It's not brewers yeast, it's not bread yeast ... it's TOTALLY different. Nutritional yeast is a microorganism that grows in a controlled environment on sugar cane and beet molasses. It gets harvested and is heated to deactivate the yeast, keeping it from leavening when you use it. This process dries it out and it becomes the yellow, flaky product that we can buy from the store. It has a distinct cheesy, nutty flavor.

15 Ways to Use Nutritional Yeast

I started using nutritional yeast as a cheese substitute when I needed one. However, there are so many great benefits to it, I now add it to so many things, even when I don't need a cheese substitute. It is a complete protein which means that it contains all of the amino acids that your body can't produce. It also contains a ton of minerals including zinc, manganese and iron. It contains 4 grams of fiber too! Nutritional yeast is low in sodium and fat which makes it a great flavor burst to foods while being good for your diet. It's gluten free, soy free and dairy free.

Being a vegetarian, I love nutritional yeast for its B-Vitamins, including B-6, B-12, folate, thiamine and niacin to name a few. Just a 1/2 teaspoon a day can give you your daily dose of Vitamin B. Because nutritional yeast is grown in a controlled environment, it is fortified with B-12, which can only be found in animal products. It is important for us veggie eaters to get our B-12. B-12 deficiency can be the cause of many things ... anemia, gastritis, immune system disorders like Graves' disease or lupus and even conditions effecting the small intestines like celiac disease, Crohn's disease or bacterial growth.

Nutritional yeast is not just for vegetarians and vegans though! It is a great addition to any diet, gluten-free, paleo ... even carnivores! Lastly, not all nutritional yeast is created equal. Check the label to make sure it has what you're looking for. Because not all nutritional yeast is the same, they will vary in flavor too. The brands I tend to use are Frontier, Mrs. Braggs and Kal.

Why I Love Nutritional Yeast

15 Ways to Use Nutritional Yeast

  1. It's a thickener ... replace flour in any sauce using nutritional yeast as your thickening agent.
  2. It's a binder ... replace your breadcrumbs in a burger to help hold them together.
  3. Add it to baby food.
  4. Sprinkle it on popcorn.
  5. Make a Vegan Mac & Cheese or even add some to your box macaroni and cheese.
  6. Top your salad with it.
  7. Make a salad dressing with nutritional yeast, olive oil, Mrs. Braggs Amino Acids, lemon juice, garlic, salt and pepper.
  8. Sprinkle it on homemade tortilla chips or kale chips before baking them.
  9. Mix it in your mashed potatoes.
  10. Add it to your soup.
  11. Sprinkle it on your roasted vegetables.
  12. Amazing nachos! No more soaking nuts overnight for a creamy cheese dip ... this dip takes 15 minutes and it's delicious! Use the cheese sauce as a dip or mix with your favorite roasted vegetables. Sometimes, I even replace the jalapeños with basil and I have an Italian cheese dip or add a little Buffalo Sauce and faux-chicken for a vegan Buffalo Chicken Cheese Dip.
  13. Add it to your marinade.
  14. Toss it with your fries before you bake them.
  15. Make an eggless egg salad or even add it to your normal egg salad.

Or ... if you're like my son, you'll grab a spoon and have a scoop just as it is! However you decide to use nutritional yeast, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do, and please, I'm always interested in more ways to use it so let me know how you like to use nutritional yeast too!

Homemade Elderberry Syrup

The last family wedding was a big one. The kids were both in the wedding, as well as Paul. Simon was only 3 weeks old. Of course, two days before the wedding, I got a cold.  I was with all my sisters getting our nails done and the mother-of-the-bride saw that I was not in my normal condition and asked me if I had been taking elderberry syrup. Elderberry what?

On my way home, I picked some up at the local pharmacy. It was pretty pricy, but from what it sounded like, the price would be worth it. I had a few doses and by the time the wedding came, I felt great! That was now four months ago and that little tiny bottle is finally gone. Time to make some from scratch, save a little money and test out a homemade recipe!

This past week, the whole house has had a little sore throat or stuffy nose but taking the elderberry syrup has kept the colds from amounting to anything. I love this stuff!

Elderberries: Elderberries contain a lot of biofavanoids, which can help boost your immune system. They are also an anti-inflammatory which reduces congestion and swelling. Taking elderberries helps shorten your cold and flu by a few days while not letting the symptoms get as strong. Some people actually take elderberry syrup preventatively so the cold and flu never sets in. I ordered my elderberries from Mount Rose Herbs.

Cinnamon: The combination of honey and cinnamon has long been used to fight colds and flu. There is no scientific evidence to back it up, but since the ancient Chinese used it and it has stayed popular until current day, I'm a believer!

Ginger: I love ginger for calming bellies but it also is great at fighting colds by keeling your immune system strong.

Honey: As you may know, I love honey and its amazing healing elements. Honey helps suppress a coughs, keeping honey in its raw form also provides stronger healing by not killing off its natural minerals and enzymes. While it's not essential, try to pick us some raw local honey.

Homemade Elderberry Syrup

Makes 2 cups

3/4 c dried elderberries
3 c water
1 t cinnamon or 1 stick
1 1/2 t grated ginger
3/4 c raw honey

In a pot, boil water, elderberries, cinnamon and ginger. Keep it at a slow rolling boil for about 45 minutes or until it reduces by half. Remove from heat and strain out the berries. Let it cool down for about 30 minutes before adding in the honey.

Dosage: 1/2 to 1 tablespoon for adults and 1/2 to 1 teaspoon for children. Children under the age of one should not take honey. If interested, you can substitute honey with blackstrap molasses

Keep refrigerated in a container. This syrup is sure to last for a couple months.

Essential Oils: Your Child's Medicine Cabinet

Essential Oils: Your Child's Medicine Cabinet
I have had friends over the years swear by essential oils and I was always interested, but I never would pull the trigger and buy them. The idea of them just seemed very foreign and I just didn't know where to start.

Once I finally bought some, I kicked myself for not buying them sooner. There are so many amazing things that you can do with essential oils: from cleaning to purifying and my personal favorite, healing. They are truly an amazing and powerful medicine! My medicine cabinet is now filled with different oils and when my family starts to get uncomfortable and sick, I reach for them and I feel confident that they will work and good that I am not filling their little bodies with antibiotics if I don't have to!

There's nothing worse than when one of your babies isn't feeling well. You want to do anything to get them better and as soon as possible! If your babies are ailing, below are some oils that may help their ailment! Make sure you use them with caution just as you would modern medicine!

*Always test an oil on your baby before liberally applying it. Take 1 drop mixed with 1 T carrier oil and rub it on your baby's foot. Wait an hour or two to make sure they don't have a reaction.

*Always dilute the essential oil before using it. Again, this can be done by adding it to your carrier oil. I usually do 1 drop of essential oil to 2 T carrier oil. Organic Virgin Coconut Oil is a wonderful carrier oil for young skin. We use a lot of organic virgin coconut oil in this house. I use it as an all-over body lotion for my babies and myself. It is gentle on skin while being anti-viral and anti-fungal. If you're unsure if you have the right coconut oil, it should be bright white and smell like coconuts!

Calming and Sleep Aid: Apply lavender to the bottom of your baby's feet, neck or down their spine.

Cold, Flu and Congestions: Apply pine or fir to babies feet. Equal parts cinnamon leaf, fir needle and sweet orange with a carrier oil.
It's a natural Vick's Vapor Rub!Clove and basil also work well once you're babies are at least 2.

Colic: Rubbing dill on their belly as well on the backs of their necks can help. Use lavender or chamomile to calm them. Most oils that are good for digestion are not safe for use for babies under 2 ... by then, colic is all gone.

Constipation: Rub grapefruit on your baby's belly in a clockwise motion.

Cough: Rub 1-3 drops of pine or fir on your baby's chest, upper back and neck. It is also beneficial to use a diffuser at night with these oils.

Cradle Cap: Rub lavender on their scalp 1 hour before bath time. Olive oil is the best carrier oil for cradle cap.

Diaper Rash Spray: 1/4 c witch hazel, 1/4 c aloe vera, 15 drops lavender, 15 drops chamomile. Spray and relieve!

Earaches: Rub tea tree oil behind their painful ear, down their lymph nodes and down their neck. Put a little lavender on their forehead to calm them. Never apply essential oils in their ears; use mullein garlic drops for that but we're talking essential oils here!

Germ Spray: 1 drops sweet orange + 2 drops cinnamon leaf + 1 drop of fir needle mixed with 3 T witch hazel and 2 t carrier oil

Nausea and Stomachaches: Rub dill on your baby's belly.

Runny Nose: Apply lemon under their nose and on their feet.

Teething and Toothaches: Many people have said to use clove, however, clove is a very strong essential oil and should not be used on kids under the age of 2. If you want to use essential oils for teething, chamomile is the best one for calming, but I would personally invest in an amber teething necklace and leave the oils behind.

Essential Oils: Your Child's Medicine Cabinet

Still can't find your answer? When in doubt ... lavender! I use lavender all the time. It's calming and helps your baby relax, it's good for skin issues, aches, pains and allergies. Seriously, it's some amazing stuff!

Make sure you are using 100% certified therapeutic grade essential oils. Oil Fragrances are already mixed with carrier oils and some have fillers and artificial ingredients.

Natural remedies do not work for everyone so consult your physician for any concerns. I am far from a doctor, but essential oils have worked for me and I hope they work for you!

DIY Egg and Honey Deep Conditioning Hair Mask

Egg and Honey Deep Conditioning Hair MaskI finally reached the point after baby that my hair has started falling out (between 3 and 4 months for me). I was so hopeful because with my second baby it was just find ... it must be the boys that make my hair fall out! It's really bad this time too. It's the 1/2 inch all around my hair line which is quite noticeable. It's terrible! Not only am I pulling out clumps of hair at a time, but my hair also feel like straw which is a first.

I have tried different shampoos and conditioners, I have tried a different brushes and combs. Nothing seems to work. I have made numerous homemade shampoos and conditioners in the past, but none of them seem to work great for my hair type. I will be the first to admit that the thought of putting egg and mayonnaise in my hair was a little off putting regardless of what people say. But, desperate times call for desperate measures so I was going to try a homemade deep conditioning treatment. If you were to see my hair, you would realize why I have the change of heart. I needed to try something new ... anything!

There were lots of recipes out there so I put a few together to make the best for my hair. I wanted egg yolk because the proteins rebuild damaged hair as well as help strengthen it. I wanted coconut oil because my hair has been so dry that I needed to use a strong moisturizer. I have had many people tell me that they regularly use coconut oil on their hair and love it. Coconut oil will be a bit lighter and give more shine than olive oil. Lastly honey, I wanted honey because it is filled with nutrients that encourage hair growth as well as help your hair retain its moisture for the inside out. There were a few that recipes that would add in a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar for shine but that wasn't my priority and I figured I would get good shine from the coconut oil (which I did).

There are many essential oils that you can use for your hair. I tend to stay away from lemon and lemongrass in my hair because they can really change your color, some people love that though. Here are a few of my favorites.

Essential Oils for Hair:

Chamomile: For fine to normal hair. Conditions and helps scaly scalp. Gives blonde highlights

Lavender: Good for all hair types. Calms the scalp.

Peppermint: For dry hair. Stimulates scalp increasing hair growth.

Rosemary: For oily hair. Promotes hair growth as well as a dandruff treatment.

Tea Tree: For oily hair. Helps dry scalp, dandruff and even lice.

Thyme: Helps treat hair loss

Egg and Honey Deep Conditioning Hair Mask

Egg and Honey Deep Conditioning Hair Mask

Good for 1 mask for medium length hair.

3 T coconut oil (needs to be unrefined ... it should be white and smell like coconuts)
1 egg yolk
1 t honey
6 drops essential oils

Melt coconut oil so it is a liquid. Add remaining ingredients and whisk together.

Take sections of your dry hair and begin running the mask through your hair as well as massaging your scalp. Once your hair is completely covered, tie it up in a bun to keep it together.

To increase effectiveness, run a hot blowdryer on it for a minute. Then wrap a warmed damp towel around your head and leave it for at least two-three hours. (Some will leave it on overnight with a shower cap. I got great results in just 3 hours though.)

Rinse with warm water and then wash thoroughly.

I have been doing this treatment once a week, helping my hair get stronger and I'm seeing less breakage and my straw-hair is long gone!

Homemade Gripe Water

Simon, the newest addition to the family has been an amazing blessing. He laughs, he's silly, he's so much fun to watch play around ... but lately, he's been getting more and more uncomfortable. I have tried quite a few changes to help him along from changing my diet, his eating habits, holding him upright longer after he feeds, etc. All things have helped little by little, but usually just for a short while. Sometimes he gets in such a crazy tizzy that he can't seem to calm himself enough to eat or sleep when that's all he really wants to do.

Gripe water has been a big game changer for us. When he's having a little fit and needs to settle down, a little gripe water in his belly instantly calms him. It's seriously amazing! I bought a bottle at the store when I was in desperate need, trying anything to help his discomfort. I wasn't looking at price tags, I was just trying to find a light at the end of the tunnel. Since it was helping so much, we went through the bottle pretty quickly.

I went back to the store to get another bottle just to realize that the bottle of miracle juice was $10! I knew it is worth its weight in gold, but I also knew that the best things in life are homemade. So, I set down the bottle and went home to do some research.

There are a lot of different recipes out there. I checked what each herb did and thought if it was important for Simon's symptoms. He's more gassy and not that much of a spitter so I wanted to go with ingredients that were super calming to his belly.

Chamomile: Helps calm your baby. Promotes relaxation and sleep

Ginger: Calms bellies and helps relieve nausea.

Fennel: Helps settle their tummies and stimulates appetite. Helps get rid of gas and bloating.

Dill: Helps settle their tummies and stimulates appetite.

Cinnamon: Helps digestion.

For us, the gripe water has not been a cure all, but it does help him when he needs to eat and sleep. I am still trying different experiments with foods that I eat to see if there are more ways to calm him down. Another savior for us has been a weekly trip to the chiropractor. Every baby is different and what works for one doesn't always work for another. Keep your spirits up and keep on keeping on! Eventually, your baby will be comfortable!

Homemade Gripe Water

Makes 1 cup

1 c water
1 chamomile tea bag
1 ginger tea bag
1 t fennel seed
1 t dill seed
1/2 t vegetable glycerin (or another sweetener, just NEVER honey for infants!)
1/8 t ground cinnamon

Heat water in a pot. Once it is just getting ready to boil take it off. Put your loose spices on a tea ball or tea bag. Add all of your ingredients to the hot water and let steep for 8 minutes.

Once it is cooled, let your little one try it out.

Dosage: 1 teaspoon / 5 mL

Keep it in the refrigerator for up to two week.s

Mastitis: How to Prevent and Treat it Naturally

"Mastitis.", "Ooo...say it again.", "Mastitis...Mastitis, Mastitis", "OOO! It tingles!"

How to Prevent and Treat Mastitis Naturally

Anyone catch where that's from? For me, just hearing the word 'mastitis' is like the hyenas in The Lion King hearing Mufasa. The thought of it sends shivers down my spine and makes me kringe thinking that I might get it ... again! However, without fail, I always seem to. This past week, I had my first scare with Simon. I could tell a milk duct was clogged, so I went on extreme treatment as to not let mastitis set in and it worked!

I haven't always been so lucky or have had a warning. I still remember with Gabriel, my first, when I got mastitis. I spiked a huge fever, I was sweating and shivering cold at the same time, but the pain of nursing was excruciating! I knew nursing was the best thing to help get rid of the infection, but every time I got ready to nurse, I kringed as I picked him up because the pain is like no other! Okay, I may be exaggerating ... how quickly we forget childbirth, right?! But just like childbirth, it will be over and your world will be normal again and nursing will be a wonderful calming experience.

I'm a firm believer that when I get mastitis, it's my bodies way of saying, "Take it easy!". The times that I have gotten it is when I'm trying to balance too many things and I've been running around like crazy. This throws my milk supply off and then my feeding aren't as regular ... all a recipe for mastitis!

Clogged Duct + No Rest = Mastitis

Prevention

  1. Stay regular: Your body gets used to when and how much your baby wants to eat. It you start changing it up too much, there can be milk leftover and
  2. Make sure you have a good latch: If you're baby doesn't latch well, they will think they are finished on that side because they can't get anymore out when really there is milk waiting to be had!
  3. Drink plenty of water: This is good advice for life but when you're in charge of hydrating yourself as well as another person, it takes a lot of water!
  4. Wear comfortable, well-fitting bras: Bras and clothing that is too tight can but off flow.
  5. Lecithin: It helps thin out your milk so that your milk ducts won't clog. I have a friend that has had recurring clogged ducts and she takes this daily as a prevention and has been free from clogged ducts ever since! You can take it in pill form, as a dietary supplement. If you're not a fan of supplements, there is natural lechithin in egg yolks so start having more eggs.

Treatment

  1. Rest, rest rest and nurse, nurse, nurse! Throw all rules aside of only feeding your baby every few hours or start with one side than the other side, etc. For a day or two, just lay around and nurse whenever your baby will let you.
  2. Vitamin C: Whenever you are fighting an infection, an extra boost of Vitamin C is needed to keep up your immune system.
  3. Fresh garlic: Helps kick the infection. Garlic pills are not the same as raw garlic! Luckily, I love garlic, but if it's a bit much for you, slice it instead of mincing it ... it won't have as much of a 'bite'. Put your garlic slices on some bread and cream cheese or a tomato slice and take it down!
  4. Massage: When I am nursing, I will always rub the spot where my lump is to help flow.
  5. Hot showers: This helps relieve the pain as well as helps your milk flow.
  6. Cabbage leaves: USE WITH CAUTION! This is one that I have never done because too much cabbage leaves can dry up your milk supply. However, many will put cold cabbage leaves on to help relieve the pain and help your milk flow. They say to do this for only 30 minutes at a time and not longer than 4 times a day.
In my cases, I usually have a rough 2 days and the last day is a painful lump that will go away the next day. However, this is me and everyone is different. Mastitis is very serious and can lead to more serious problems. Natural remedies do not work for everyone so consult your physician for any concerns. I am far from a doctor but these are things that have worked for me and I hope they work for you!

The Importance of Pregnancy & Yoga

Lately, I have been having complete breakdowns. I don't know if it's the hormones or I'm just putting too much on my plate. The kids have been more unpleasant than I have ever known them. I knew something had to shift.

Yesterday, I decided to do a little less work and just focus on some good time with the kids. They have been really whiney lately and I think we needed some 'us time'. Don't get me wrong, I didn't entirely give up my work, I just refocused my energy and got the work done on the side (I still did 4 loads of laundry, vacuumed the house, made 8 pans of kale chips, weeded the garden and had a yummy dinner).

When Savina went down for her nap, Gabe and I did yoga. After just 30 minutes that I took to do it, I realized what was missing in my days. The first thing that left my routine to get more things done had been yoga. What a terrible decision it was to cut yoga out of my day. The breathing helped me slow down and relax and the stretching helped my body get more energy. And watching Gabe do different yoga poses put a huge smile across both our faces!

The kids and I had a great day. I was completely refreshed. They still had their tears but I didn't have one! It was wonderful ... work still got done and we were all happier. Final decision ... more yoga, less stress!

Benefits of Yoga During Pregnancy

  • Increases circulation
  • Helps your muscles prepare for labor by stretching them while increasing flexibility and endurance. This can help decrease lower back pain that you get during later trimesters.
  • Reduces stress and anxiety
  • Helps you learn to focus on breathing
  • Improves sleep

Find the Time

  • Take a class.
  • Buy a prenatal yoga DVD
  • Watch a youtube video: There are tons of videos on the web that cater to your specific trimester and you can find one that is the right amount of time that you need ... or have! I like doing this because they are free and I can change it up every day.
  • Print out a yoga cheat sheet. I found this at YogaLifeStyle.com. When the kids and I are playing outside or downstairs, I can bring this with me and get my time in while they are busy.

I have made a commitment to myself to get my daily yoga in ... not just for me, but for the sanity of the kids and the health and wellness of new baby! Plus, getting back in a routine now will only help me in sticking with it once new baby is here, helping me in post baby health and sanity. Wish me luck!

The Benefits of Raspberry Leaf Tea; Pregnancy and Beyond

Pregnancy & Raspberry Leaf TeaMy second pregnancy was a little rough on my back so I started getting prenatal massages to help out with my motion and the pressure. The masseuse was shocked that I wasn't drinking raspberry leaf tea. She informed me that it is great to drink before pregnancy to help strengthen your uterine muscles and tone your pelvic floor. This will help you have a smoother labor by relaxing the walls during contractions. It is also helpful after you deliver your baby to get the uterus and pelvic back to their normal stability.

I went home and did a little research and found this all to be very true. Where was this information for my first pregnancy? How did I not know about this? I also found out that when taken during pregnancy, red raspberry leaf is said to boost a mom's immune system, ease morning sickness and promote better circulation. Once new baby is here, some say raspberry leaf tea will assist with breast milk supply as well as help decrease bleeding.

Around the world, red raspberry leaf has been used to treat flu, diarrhea, relieve sore throats and aid in fertility. It is also used to lower the blood sugar of diabetic women, regulate irregular menstrual cycles, decrease heavy periods and lower blood pressure. So, having raspberry leaf tea in the house at all times, for all women is quite beneficial! I think I need to start buying it in bulk!

Where Can I Find It?

Don't be fooled when you see raspberry tea in the store, it is usually just raspberry flavoring (organic or not). You need to look for Red Raspberry Leaf Tea, it is just made with the leaves of the plant so it actually tastes more like a green, earthy tea than raspberries. Some health food stores will carry loose tea or you can buy it online at places like Mountain Rose Herbs. I have been able to find it in tea bag form at a few stores around my area by a brand called Traditional Medicinals.

How Much Should I Take?

When pregnant, you should drink a cup a day during your first trimester, two cups for second trimester and as much as 4 or 5 cups a day during your third trimester! This can be a lot of tea but as you know, when pregnant, we need to up our water supply so it's nice to have a water alternative. I also like to change up the way I drink the tea to add a little variety. Here's my favorite hot and cold tea drinks:

Hot Red Raspberry Leaf Tea
8 oz water
1 tea bag or 1 to 2 t of loose tea

slice of lemon (optional)
1 t honey (optional)

Bring water to almost a boil, add tea and let stand for about 7 minutes before enjoying.

Hot Red Raspberry Leaf Tea

Red Red Raspberry Leaf Spritzer
4 oz water
1 tea bag or 1 to 2 t of loose tea
4 oz sparkling water
1 lime slice
2-3 berries (I like using raspberries or strawberries the best)
2 mint leaves (optional)

Bring water to almost a boil, add tea and let stand for 5 minutes then put it in the fridge to cool.

Meanwhile, muddle your lime, berries and mint in a glass and add your sparkling water. Once your tea mixture is cool, remove the tea bag or loose leaf tea and add it your muddled concoction. Enjoy!

I will make a big batch of tea in the beginning of the week and leave it in the fridge so it's already cold and I can add it to my mixture when I'm ready for it.
